Drowning is a serious issue. It affects many families nationwide official dissertation as they experience the tragedy of losing a child to their own backyard pool, left wondering how they could have done better preventing it. But, right now we aren’t talking about prevention, instead the focus of this document is to educate people about the statistics of drowning. So, if your up for it, lets begin.
Every year a estimated 360,000 people die every year from drowning, which is a shockingly high number. Unfortunately, most of these deaths are among young children, specifically kids between ages 1-14. Not only that, it’s also in the top 5 reasons for death for kids in that age range. Sadly enough, if a child were to survive a drowning incident there is a decent chance that the child could get long term brain damage such as, memory problems, learning disabilities and permanent loss of basic functions.
Another unfortunate fact is that 90% of unintentional drownings happen to be in lower to middle class countries with the majority of drownings happening to males, with the most common ages for drowning being from 1-4(years old). Which among all this there are also specific types of drownings, and the most common fatal one is called drowning, which for those who don’t know that’s the one where the guy goes under and doesn’t come back up. Another type of drowning is called injury related drowning which is responsible for 7% of injury related deaths, which for this one you hurt yourself (how you do it doesn’t matter) and you go under water and don’t come back up.
And finally one of the less common groups of drownings are boat/ship related drownings, which is usually caused by overcrowded boats, unsafe equipment, and untrained boat drivers, or in other words, you’re on the boat and then your not. Another surprising fact is that if you’re around water you have a higher chance of drowning then people who are not (it’s not actually surprising), but drowning is a very serious issue around the world affecting many families physically and mentally, so next time you go swimming remember the facts and be safe.
